Hitchhiking Albanian Riviera

The Albanian Riviera ended up being one of the most visually striking stretches of coast I saw anywhere in the Balkans. Mountain roads like i had experienced in Kosovo, rocky shorelines like in Croatia and Montenegro, clear water, small villages, and long views out toward the sea gave this part of Albania a beauty that felt both dramatic and a little underappreciated. It was one of those places that made me stop and realize just how special the Albanian coast really is.

What made the journey even more memorable was that this was not just another coastal stop. By that point, I had already been moving through the region for a long time, and the Riviera felt like a true continuation of that Adriatic and Balkan voyage, not just a beach detour. It had beauty, yes, but also challenge, movement, and the kind of unpredictability that tends to make a place stick in your memory.

The Albanian Riviera Took My Breath Away

By the time I got to this stretch of Albania, hitchhiking had already become a growing part of how I moved through the Balkans. Just like my hitchhiking voyage across Northern Macedonia, the Albanian Riviera turned into a different kind of day. The route itself was what made it special. This was a coast that felt raw, bright, mountainous, and more rugged than polished. It did not feel overbuilt. It felt like the land still dominated the experience.

That was the first thing that really hit me. The road kept opening up to incredible views of crystal-clear water, steep hillsides, and villages that looked like they had been dropped into the coastline rather than forced onto it. It felt like one of those regions that still holds onto a little more mystery than many of the Adriatic places people rush toward first.

Porto Palermo and the Coast Between

One of the most memorable parts of the route was Porto Palermo, which stood out immediately. A fortress on the sea already makes for a strong stop, but what really stayed with me was the feeling of the place. It looked like the kind of place you could easily imagine spending the night with a tent, waking up to the sea right outside, and feeling completely removed from everything else.

That whole stretch of coast gave me that kind of feeling. I kept getting short rides, which meant the day unfolded in pieces rather than in one smooth line. But that actually worked in the Riviera’s favor. It gave me more chances to stop, look around, and take in places I probably would have missed if I had just blasted through on a bus. The coast between stops became part of the destination itself.

The Long Walk to Sarandë

At a certain point, though, the beauty came with a challenge. Traffic thinned out to almost nothing, and what had felt like an adventurous coastal route started becoming a real push on foot. I ended up walking a long stretch of road up and down mountain terrain with more distance left ahead than I wanted to think about as the sun started dropping.

Even then, the scenery kept giving something back. Views out toward Corfu in the distance, the shape of the coastline, and the sheer openness of that road made the walk feel exhausting but still memorable. It was the kind of stretch where the landscape almost convinced you to keep going even while your legs were asking different questions.

Eventually, just as the day was starting to feel like it might end with a long dark walk into Sarandë, I got lucky. A couple picked me up near sunset and brought me the rest of the way. That final lift changed the mood instantly. After all the effort, it felt like the coast had one more small favor left to give me.

Why the Journey Was Still Worth It

Looking back, the Albanian Riviera stands out not because it went perfectly, but because it did not. The challenge was real, but it never canceled out the beauty. If anything, it made the route feel more lived and more earned. The coast gave me mountains, sea, villages, Porto Palermo, and one of those long travel days that feels like it stretched far beyond the map.

That is why I still remember it so strongly. The Albanian Riviera was not just pretty. It felt adventurous, a little unpredictable, and I will admit – frustrating, and deeply worth it. If you travel that stretch, you may want to be a little more strategic than I was, but either way, the coast and voyage itself was incredible.
