In the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean lies a gem, a place where tradition and modernity intertwine seamlessly. American Samoa, an unincorporated territory of the United States, has been a calling for me nearly all of my life. As I prepare to embark on this cross Pacific adventure in January, I can’t help but reflect on the three compelling reasons that have fueled my desire to visit this island paradise in the South Pacific.
Here we go:
#3 Immersing in the Culture and People:
American Samoa is well known for its lush green jagged mountains landscape and it’s blue sea. A breathtaking National Park far out in the South Seas. Behind the vivid hues of the American Samoan scenery lie the vibrant shades of its rich cultural heritage.
In January, lies an opportunity to immerse myself in the rich traditions and warm hospitality of the Samoan people. From their ancient customs to the vibrant celebrations, I yearn to immerse of their way of life and traditions that have existed for thousands of years. Through conversations, dances, and shared meals, I aim to not merely be a spectator, but an active participant in immersing with the people like I have done in Hawai’i, Palau, Tonga and much of the Pacific.
#2 Understanding American Samoa’s Unique Political Landscape:
One of the most intriguing facets of American Samoa that I’m most curious about, is its distinctive status as an unincorporated territory of the United States, while staying true to its cultural roots. My fascination with history and governance fuels my curiosity to delve into all that has allowed the integrity of it’s chiefdom to thrive amidst the influence of the power of the United States.
By talking to locals, historians, and community leaders, I hope to better understand the keys to the preservation of their cultural identity within the framework of a foreign governance system that is America. Understanding how tradition and modern governance coexist in the modern day will undoubtedly be an incredibly unique experience that will provide me a unique perspective.
Unincorporated U.S. Territory? But strong cultural prescence? Count me in!
#1 A Dream of a 15 Year Old, Comes True:
In the summer of 2003, I embarked on a new journey: high school, where learning took on new meaning, with greater challenges in a wider spectrum. This chapter of my life also brought with it a newfound curiosity about the world and it’s places. Eager to learn more, I stumbled upon the CIA World Factbook. At the top of the list was American Samoa, and from that moment, my fascination with this beautiful destination began. Since then, American Samoa has remained at the top of my travel dreams.
For over 15 more years, this dream has been at the forefront guiding my aspirations and igniting my curiosity. Aligning a growing journey through world cultures with the deep knowledge and respect gained from Hawaiians, I couldn’t be anymore ready to take on the South Pacific, beyond the hues of paradise most only see.
Now, as I prepare my bags and my heart for this journey, the realization of this dream signifies much more than a mere visit. It symbolizes perseverance, the power of passion, and the fulfillment of a promise made to my younger self.
