Palau is one of the most vibrant and naturally beautiful places in the world, with endless shades of blue stretching across its Southern Lagoon. And it’s culture is even more beautiful. However, that beauty doesn’t stop at the surface. Beneath it lies a completely different world, one that has made Palau one of the most respected diving destinations on the planet.

While many visitors come for experiences like Milky Way, Jellyfish Lake, and the iconic Rock Islands, scuba diving is without a doubt one of the most unforgettable ways to experience this place.

Coming into Palau, I was still relatively fresh in the world of scuba diving. I had gotten certified two years prior, but had only recently completed another set of dives just weeks before arriving. That alone opened the door to something entirely new for me, the ability to explore the world beneath the surface in what would become my 40th country traveled.

First Dive Day: Ulong Channel & Siaes

Celebrating my 34th birthday started early with a long journey out into the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, Palau’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. Diving with Palau Dive Adventures, we made our way toward Ulong Channel along the western edge of the lagoon.

These dives set the tone immediately. (In photo order)

  • Ulong Channel – 50 ft | 75 minutes
  • Siaes Tunnel – 90 ft | 50 minutes
  • Siaes Corner – 70 ft | 56 minutes

The visibility, the reef life, and the sheer scale of everything underwater made it clear very quickly why Palau is held in such high regard among divers.

Second Dive Day: Blue Corner & Manta Rays

On another day, my original plan was to visit Jellyfish Lake and Milky Way. But due to low tourism numbers at the time, tours weren’t going out unless there were at least four people. My only option was to join a 6:30 AM departure that included a two-tank dive along with those experiences.

At $340, it pushed beyond what I had originally planned to spend.

But this is Palau.

And you don’t turn down a dive opportunity here.

That decision led to some of the most memorable dives of the trip.

  • Manta Cleaning Station & Big Drop Off – 60 ft | 1 hour

  • Blue Corner – 90 ft | 1 hour

Seeing manta rays glide through the water, sharks moving through the current, and the energy of Blue Corner all happening in real time is something that is hard to put into words. It is one of those experiences where you stop thinking and just take it in.

Why Diving in Palau Is Out of this World

Scuba diving adds an entirely new layer to travel. It shifts your perspective from what you see above ground to what exists beneath it, and in a place like Palau, that difference is massive.

The reefs are alive, the visibility is unreal, and the biodiversity feels constant. Every dive feels like something is happening around you, whether it’s large marine life passing through or smaller details in the reef that keep revealing themselves the longer you look.

Palau is not just a place to try diving, its a place to enjoy world class diving!

Final Thoughts

Diving in Palau was one of those moments where travel expands into something more. It was not just about checking off a destination, but about stepping into a completely different world within that destination.

Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful I chose to push myself into diving more seriously before arriving here. It allowed me to experience Palau in a way I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to.

If you are heading to Palau and have even the slightest interest in diving, do it.

It is, without question, a must.
