Around this time ten years ago, I was unemployed and broke. My efforts, dreams, and ambitions of becoming a web developer had taken a hit after a series of setbacks that left me demotivated, depressed, and not exactly working with much money. In the middle of all of that, I realized I needed a break. I needed to step away, even if only for a short time.

With only a few hundred dollars to spare, I had to work within my means if I wanted any kind of international trip at all.

My choice: The Bahamas

Why The Bahamas?

Even though plenty of Americans travel there every year, the Bahamas made sense for me at the time. Coming from New York, it was one of the closest international destinations I could realistically reach without overextending myself.

There were cheaper options I could have gone with, and I knew that. But the Bahamas had already been sitting somewhere on my list, especially after having lived in Florida before New York. It felt close, attainable, and just far enough away to feel like I had actually gone somewhere.

But the real reason I chose the Bahamas was not Nassau itself.

It was Rose Island.

Because cruises have never really been my thing, I chose to fly into Nassau instead of taking the more common route from Miami. Nassau was not the part I was most excited about though. I made it a point to get out to nearby Rose Island, which ended up being the true highlight of the trip.

I took the Sandy Toes full-day tour, and for me, it was absolutely worth it. There is also a shorter half-day option, which might be the smarter move if you are trying to avoid getting completely cooked in the sun like I did.

Rose Island felt like a narrow stretch of sand surrounded by clear blue water, the kind of place that gives you space to breathe and think without much else competing for your attention. At that point in my life, that was exactly what I needed. It was a simple reset, but a real one. It gave me the time to reflect on where I was, what I needed to change, and what kind of life I actually wanted to keep chasing.

Compared to the kind of travel I would go on to experience in later years, this was a relatively easy and straightforward trip. But looking back now, I can see how moments like this quietly set the foundation for everything that came after.

Travel: I Do It My Way

Those cruises that leave Miami for the Bahamas always look fun and convenient.

I still did not go that route.

Instead, I flew into Nassau, grabbed a cab, and stayed in a simple hotel off a side street. Part of that decision came down to budget, but a bigger part of it was instinct. Even back then, I had a strong pull to do things my own way. I wanted to experience a place on my own terms, even if the trip itself was small.

Looking back now, I can see that this was one of the early signs of the travel style that would eventually define so much of my life.

At the time, I had no idea how much that trip would matter.

Within a few years, things began to shift. Life started moving in a different direction, and I found myself traveling more, eventually living in both New Zealand and Hawaiʻi and making my way through dozens of countries.

The Bahamas still holds its place in that journey. Not because it was the most adventurous destination I have been to, but because it came at the right time and gave me exactly what I needed in that moment to inspire what would come next for the next decade and change of world voyaging.

In the end…

Sometimes the smallest trips carry the greatest impact, and you do not realize it until much later.

What felt like a simple escape at the time ended up being part of a much bigger shift in my life. It was one of those early moments where I started to understand what travel could do for me, especially when I needed it the most.

So yes, thank you, Bahamas.
