The wa’a, or traditional canoe, is more than just a vessel; it’s a symbol of connection, history, and culture across the Pacific. In this latest entry of my journey, it’s an exploration of the deep significance of the Pacific voyaging tradition, which has united the Pacific islands for centuries. From Hawai’i’s reviving navigation culture to the Micronesian ongoing traditions, these canoes are the backbone of Oceania.

In this episode, I dive into One Ocean, One People and how the teachings of the great Master Navigator Mau Pialug continue to inspire the unity of Pasific peoples. But beyond the voyages, this exploration also touches on the challenges of preserving our cultural identities, especially in the face of modern-day issues like climate change and displacement. As well as the social economic struggles in the modern day across the islands.

The Legacy of the Wa’a
The wa’a represents more than just a means of travel; it’s an enduring connection to the ocean and our roots. As we journey across the islands, the knowledge of navigation, culture, and history is passed down through generations. Captain Bonnie Kahapea-Tanner of the Kanehunamoku Voyaging Academy shares her insights on the role of the wa’a in uniting Pasifika peoples today.
But the challenge is real. As our culture faces the pressures of modern life, the spirit of the wa’a continues to offer hope for future generations to reconnect with the sea, each other, and their cultural identity.
